Dexter’s Select Secure Silver at Dorchester Charity Tournament

A DSWFC select squad put on a superb display at the annual Dorchester Walking Football Charity Event, returning home with the runners-up trophy after an incredible run to the final.

The annual seven-a-side tournament, brilliantly organized by Stan Newiss and Marie Canning, brought together 18 teams from as far afield as Barry, Marnhull, Swanage, and Portland. Most importantly, the event raised vital funds for two fantastic causes: Prostate Cancer UK and Weldmar Hospice Care.

The tournament rules required mixed squads of 50s and 60s, with a strict limit on the number of under-60 players permitted on the pitch at any one time.

Unstoppable Group Stage Form

The Dexter’s squad started in good form early on, finishing top of their five-team group.

The Knockout Rounds

Displaying precise passing and excellent hold-up play, Dexter’s carried their fine form into the business end of the tournament.

In the quarter-finals, they faced a tough Sherborne side. A single, decisive strike from the prolific Jason Sheath was enough to book a place in the final four.

The semi-finals set up a highly anticipated local derby against Wimborne, who had just knocked out a lively Argy Bargies side. In a tense affair, Tony Rimmer coolly slotted home a penalty to secure a 1-0 victory and a place in the final.

Tournament Note: Incredible defensive discipline and stellar work from Steve Bailey in goal meant Dexter’s reached the Final without conceding a single goal across six consecutive matches.

The Final

The final against a powerful Amesbury side from Wiltshire was a fiercely contested, physical battle. Amebury were recently crowned League and Cup Champions in the Dorset Walking Football League. While Dexter’s fought valiantly until the final whistle, a single Amesbury goal decided the tie.

Though narrowly missing out on the title, Dexter’s Select can be incredibly proud of their undefeated run to the final, their immaculate defensive record, and bringing home some well-deserved silverware!
