The DSWFC 65s team traveled to Littledown for the season-closing tournament without manager Terry Benson, who was sunning himself in Majorca but closely following events via Tournify.
The matchday squad welcomed back midfield general Andy Wilson following his recent foot operation. Andy’s presence had been sorely missed during the closing stages of the 65s league campaign, where we secured a strong third-place finish behind runners-up Bournemouth Reds and champions Eastleigh.
Round Robin Stage
The round-robin group got off to a flying start with a 1-0 victory over Dorchester. Pete Kane netted the decisive goal in a performance defined by excellent possession and total control of the game.
We carried that momentum into the second match, securing a comfortable 2-0 win against Bournemouth Whites. Merv Young bagged both goals in a dominant display that gave the Whites very few opportunities.
The third fixture brought a hard-fought 0-0 draw with league champions Eastleigh. Stand-in captain Steve Bailey was in fine form, pulling off a string of great saves to keep Dexter’s level.
The final two group games against Bournemouth Reds and Weymouth Clarets both ended goalless. They were fiercely contested, with excellent goalkeeping from all sides.
Tournament Note: Exceptional defensive discipline meant Dexter Sports were the only team not to concede a single goal during the round robin stage.

The League Cup Final
The crucial point against the Clarets was enough to book Dexter Sports a place in the grand final for a rematch against Eastleigh. It was a well-deserved reward for a brilliant, collective squad effort.
The final was another tight, physical affair against our regular rivals. Despite a battling performance, Dexter’s ultimately slipped to a 2-0 defeat, unable to break through a highly organized Eastleigh rear-guard.
Looking Ahead
Far from being downbeat, the tournament proved the team is close to matching the very best in the league. With players returning from injury and others becoming available, manager Terry Benson can look forward to an improving squad – and the welcome headache of selection dilemmas – come next season.
