The first league tournament back after Christmas is often an interesting time. No league football for two months and the excesses of the festive period can sometimes take their toll. But then, the same is true for all teams!
Seven DSWFC 60s travelled to Dorchester Sports Centre for Round Three of the Dorset Walking Football League. Andy Madden was absent from the squad, while Paul Gillis made his first 60s appearance of the 2025/26 season.
The weather was wet, obviously – when isn’t it at the moment, and we had four matches scheduled… Eastleigh, Weymouth, Sherborne, and Swanage.

DSWFC Tournament report
Tournament report by John Gray & Simon Allen
First up was Eastleigh who started the day with a record of W3 D5 L0 and understandably challenging for the title. Bearing in mind our previous two meetings this season have resulted in two defeats and an aggregate score of 0-5, it was always going to be tough! We managed to keep them at bay in the first half, but then the pressure built up and we conceded three in the second half for a 0-3 defeat.
Things weren’t about to get any easier in our next match against Weymouth. The Terras had only lost one match since the start of the season and would be closer to the top teams if they could convert draws into wins. Talking of draws, we gained our only point of the day with a goalless one – the second tied match with Weymouth this season.
What wasn’t needed after playing two teams in the top three was a fixture against fourth placed team Sherborne! As it goes, it was another tight encounter in which we had our chances, including an outstanding save from a Mark (Sanderson) effort. Eventually Sherborne eked out a slim 1-0 victory.
Our final game of the day was against Swanage who hadn’t picked up any victories in the first eleven matches of the season. Another fantastic save denied a Paul (Gillis) effort and the crossbar did the same to an Andy (Wilson) one. An incredible save by Dave (Bacall) kept the Swans at bay, but he wasn’t able to keep out a spot kick in the last few moments to deny Swanage a first win of the season, 1-0.
Not a great day and that’s wasn’t just the weather! In my opinion we probably played our best football so far this season, but as they say, if you don’t take your chances you get nothing. On another day we could have had a good haul of points.”
