We recently took part in the Dorset qualifying round of the FA Walking Football Cup, facing a couple of tough fixtures in a highly competitive tournament. While the results didn’t quite reflect our overall play, there are an immense number of positives to take away as we continue to evolve in the 60s category.
Tournament update by Tom Deady
A new chapter for DSWFC60s
Today also marked a significant milestone for the squad, as it was Tom Deady’s first competitive matches in charge of our 60s squad. Tom is a familiar face to many at the club, having previously managed and played for the 50s side a few years back. It’s fantastic to have his experience and leadership back on the touchline, and the boys put in a performance that gave him plenty of foundations to build on.
Match 1: DSWFC 2 – 3 Wimborne
Our first fixture of the afternoon was a narrow 3-2 defeat against Wimborne in a game we absolutely should have drawn. We showed fantastic character throughout, fighting back twice after going behind to level the scoring. Just as the game looked to be heading for a well-deserved draw, Wimborne’s Peter Cherryman pulled off a fine finish to snatch the win against his former 60s club.
Match 2: DSWFC 1 – 1 Dorchester
Our second clash, against Dorchester, followed a very similar pattern. After going a goal down, the boys once again dug deep and showed great resilience to find an equalizer. On the balance of play, we were definitely the better team and deserved to go on and take all three points. In the end, we settled for a 1-1 draw, which is still a massive positive against strong opposition.

Managers Verdict: Control, Character, and Areas to Polish
While there are a few negatives and minor mistakes from today that the boys will get sorted out, the overriding feeling is one of immense pride. We scored three good goals, created enough chances that we should have had a few more, and controlled the tempo of both games very well.
“We played some genuinely excellent football today. With a little more luck and a bit of tightening up at the back, I ‘m entirely confident that this squad can be a match for any 60s team we play.
“Every single player put a massive shift in today, but a special mention has to go to John Gray. John walked his socks off in both matches, and his energy, work rate, and stamina across the afternoon were fantastic. Well done, John – a brilliant performance.
“Finally, congratulations to Wimborne, who ran out winners of both games today.”
