Club and league ban micro shin pads

Dexter Sports and the Dorset Walking Football League have banned the use of micro and mini shin pads.

Following a serious injury at the weekend during a Bridport FC v Ilfracombe FC match, our parent club, Dexter Sports Youth Football Club, have joined the campaign to ban the use of micro pads by issuing notice that they cannot be worn when representing the club.

As a part of the Dexter’s family, Dexter Sports Walking Football Club are duty bound to follow suit and ban the wearing of micro shin pads. However, we do feel that it’s absolutely the correct thing to do. The ban will apply to all tournaments, matches and training sessions.

We send our best regards to Riley and wish him a speedy and full recovery after his awful injury at the weekend.

Dexter Sports Club Statement

Effective immediately, micro shin pads are banned across all age groups. All players must wear full, regulation-standard shin pads for every match, training session, and club activity. Anyone not wearing proper shin protection will not be allowed to take part. Coaches and managers will be checking before sessions and fixtures. This is a club-wide safety measure to protect all players. Thanks for your cooperation.”

Tim Johnson, Club Chairman Dexter Sports YFC

Shortly after the Dexter Sports club statement, Dorset Walking Football League also made the decision to ban the use of micro shin pads. Any player wanting to use them will be disallowed by the referees and league officials.

As we reported at the start of the season, there are no rules or laws governing what constitutes appropriate shin protection. England Football have previously expressed concern on the matter, saying “…safety is prioritised by ensuring a good proportion of the shin area is covered…”.

With safety always front of mind in walking football, we should all do what we can to ensure the welfare of ourselves and those around us. Be competitive, but be careful people.
