With the advent of Spring comes the final throes of the 2024/25 season. Round Five in Bournemouth was the penultimate tournament in DSWFC’s first foray in the 65s Dorset Walking Football League.
Unfortunately, Dorchester weren’t able to make the round, so all the other teams received a 1-0 walkover win. Ahead of Dorchester’s non-appearance, we were just three points ahead of them in the table, so this was an opportunity to cement our place in the top three.
DSWFC Matchday Squad
Andy Madden, Merv Young, David Bacall (GK, captain), Jonathan Martin, Clive Robinson, Peter Kane, Peter Cherryman and Paul Kybert
Previous 2024/25 results: 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-0
Our first match of the day gave us a 2-0 win against Weymouth. It took a while for us to get going but we were never in danger of losing the match. Andy’s tenth goal of the season and another from Peter Kane secured the result. The goals came from good passing moves and great finishing.
This result was DSWFC’s fifth straight win against Weymouth this season.

Next came Bournemouth Reds. It was a very even match with both keepers making good saves to keep the score all square at 0-0.
With game heading towards a draw we were undone in the last minute. The Reds defender picked up the ball and travelled nearly half the length of the pitch unchallenged to finish with a good shot into the corner. A disappointing 1-0 defeat.

Our third match of the day was against Bournemouth Whites. We huffed and puffed a little in this game, and we took some time to get going. Again it didn’t look as if we could lose but it was on us to win it.
Pete Kane popped up with his second of the day to secure the points. A 1-0 win and three more points.
After three consecutive defeats to Bournemouth Whites, this was our second single goal victory in-a-row against them.

And finally we faced Eastleigh. We worked hard to contain a very good team who’re running away with the league. With some great tackles, saves and shot blocking it looked like we might get our first points against them this season. It was all square at halftime.
The match turned on a penalty being awarded against us. Jonathan, who was the nearest to the incident, appealed for their forward being in the area, but the ref saw David’s foot come over the line as he slipped. The penalty was given and dispatched to put us a goal down.
The second goal came late in the game from an interception which left Eastleigh’s forward one-on-one with our keeper and he finished well.
A nine point haul is quite satisfying and the realisation we’re the divisions’ second highest scorers with one round to go is also super encouraging.
Talking of that final round, we need just four points to secure third spot in the table. If B’mouth Reds have a below par final round then runner-up is possible, but unlikely.
Paul Kybert, DSWFC 65s Manager
“It was good to have David back in goal and he demonstrated what we missed in previous rounds with some great saves and distribution of the ball.
“There were great passing moves during the matches and some good possession. The work rate and defensive effort particularly in the Eastleigh and Reds games were great to see.
“A special mention also goes to Andy for turning out when he clearly wasn’t 100% but came along to give us a sub for the first time in several rounds.”
David Bacall, Dexters 65s Captain
“The team played really well and to form – we lost to the teams above us but beat the teams below us. I thought we could have easily got something from the Bournemouth game and given we were 0-0 at half time with Eastleigh the penalty was a turning point.”
Peter Cherryman, DSWFC 65s player
“We aren’t that far away from getting a result against Eastleigh which shows how we are improving.”
Mark Kay, DSWFC 50s player
“One Davey Bacall, there’s only one Davey Bacall.” 👏
