60s: Groundhog Day

Created with Sketch.

With one win and six draws in the first ten matches, Dexters have been difficult to beat this season, but goals have been tricky to come by. At some point the carefully balanced season was going to fall one way or the other – this was the tournament where that happened.

Small margins, no luck or variance – whatever you want to call it, DSWFC 60s seem to be getting it in spades this season. We don’t want this to sound like “poor us”, but five straight 1-0 defeats point to just a small tweek somewhere and the tide could turn.

DSWFC: Tournament Overview

After putting in good performances in all the games today we ended the day pointless losing all the games by the same 1-0 scoreline. In the first match (against Bournemouth Whites) we had five shots on goal. They had one deflected shot that went in – we just couldn’t catch a break!

The other three games against Eastleigh, Dorchester and Bournemouth Reds, were very similar. We peppered the opposition goal – hitting the woodwork and good goalkeeper performances kept us at bay.

John Gray, DSWFC 60s manager

I’m very pleased with the effort today. All the squad played well and on another day we would have gotten something out of each game.”

Mark Kay, DSWFC 50s player

“Seems to be the story of the 50s and the 60s at the mo. Such fine margins though we do lack goals. Sounds like a great effort though and I hope the weather wasn’t too crappy.”

Dave Bacall, DSWFC 60s goalkeeper (absent from the round)

“It’s disappointing not to come away with something when all the games were so close. Hopefully Lady Luck will have her Dexter’s head on next time.”

Paul Gillis, DSWFC 60s player (and 50s captain)

“Every player put in total commitment and effort which unfortunately wasn’t rewarded with any luck, just some extremely poor refereeing and time wasting possession by the opposition. Being unable to tackle, even from the side without contact, is leading to attacking players just shielding the ball by the sideline and waiting to be fouled. It’s turning into ‘first goal wins’ football. Unless the rules change to account for this it will destroy the game.”
