65s: Bare Bones, Good Returns

Created with Sketch.

The Dorset Walking Football League 65s division returned to action for the first time since Christmas in mid-January for Round Three in Dorchester.

We arrived at the 1610 Sports Centre with the bare seven players. That meant no subs and with a stand-in keeper as well, the level of expectation was realistically lower than normal, but we approached the day positively all the same. With a five match tournament, arriving with no subs was a worry.

Matchday Squad

Brian Greenwood, Jonathan Martin, Clive Robinson, Mervyn Young, Peter Cherryman, Peter Kane (c), Paul Kybert (gk)

Match One: Eastleigh (0-2)

Previous 2024/25 Results: 1-3, 0-1

The first game saw us go down 0-2 to table topping Eastleigh, both goals coming from errors and shots that our regular keeper David would probably have saved.

Match Two: Dorchester (1-1)

Previous 2024/25 Results: 0-0, 0-3

Our second outing of the day saw us secure a 1-1 draw against Dorchester. There were no errors in this game and a really good hard working performance secured a well deserved point.

Match Three: B’mouth Whites (1-0)

Previous 2024/25 Results: 1-0, 2-0

The third game was a 1-0 win over Bournemouth Whites. The result doesn’t reflect our dominance of the game – Paul Kybert, who was filling in as keeper hardly saw the ball such was the control we had.

Match Four: Weymouth (2-1)

Previous 2024/25 Results: 1-0, 2-0

Our fourth game against Weymouth saw us pick up another win, 2-1. Again we dominated, going 2-0 up and staying strong to see off a late fight back by Weymouth.

Match Five: Bournemouth Reds (0-0)

Previous 2024/25 Results: 1-2, 1-0

In the last game we fought hard to keep out a very strong Bournemouth Reds team to draw 0-0. Players getting in crucial tackles and blocks to frustrate the Reds. While Brian was limping for most of the game but battled on for the team.

Managers Missive

It’s impossible to pick out any individual players for praise – the whole team were great, so I’ll give them all a mention…

  • There was the lone ranger Merv up front working his socks off and scoring two goals.
  • Pete Kane, captain for the day, scoring one and dominating midfield.
  • Jonathan started in midfield, then dropped back to stifle the opposition forwards, blocking shots and forcing them away from goal.
  • Brian started at the back, before moving into midfield and chipping in with his first goal and adding more to the attack.
  • Pete Cherryman at the back, tackling, blocking shots, and driving forward whenever he could to get a number of shots off.
  • Clive played right midfield, held the ball up well and frustrated the opposition with clever shielding before releasing it. He laid on fantastic passes that put us through to score two of our goals.

“The positivity throughout the team was such that, we all thought if we had played Eastleigh later in the day, we could have got a result against them.

“In goal for Dorchester was the 50s keeper and he told us that he was glad he didn’t play in the 65s every week,(probably a bit tongue in cheek), as he didn’t normally have to work that hard.

“A great day and a nice 8 point haul.”

League Performance

After three matchday’s (and 15 matches) we’re in second place, eight points behind Eastleigh. Bournemouth Reds are just two points behind. Take a look at the current league table.
