50s: DSWFC Bow Out After Regional Final Thriller

Created with Sketch.

Dexter Sports 50s missed out on national finals qualification by the narrowest of margins following a high-octane 2–1 defeat to Clevedon & District in a pulsating Regional Final at Hamworthy.

Don’t know what happened in the previous round? Take a read and see how we did in Round Four of the WFA National Cup.

Dexters started on the front foot and took an early lead in the 6th minute when Jase found space on the edge of the area and drilled a clinical strike into the bottom corner. The side maintained superb structure throughout the first period, restricting Clevedon’s chances while maintaining control of the pace.

The second half proved a far tighter and more physical affair. Clevedon leveled in the 31st minute via a cruel stroke of luck, as a strike from five yards outside the area took a heavy deflection, wrong-footing Billy in goal. Just two minutes later, Clevedon capitalized on a free-kick awarded for a running infraction, laying the ball back for a powerful drive that went in off the inside of the post to make it 2–1.

Dexters responded instantly, shifting to a single defender at the back for the final six minutes to flood the attacking third. The team created a wave of late opportunities, only to be denied by an extraordinary performance from the Clevedon goalkeeper.

Despite the heartbreak, the DSWFC 50s squad represented Dexter Sports with immense tactical discipline and grit against a side that managed the closing stages with experience.
