The FA Walking Football Cup is the official national club cup of the English FA. Clubs from all over the country are invited to compete, with the final stages being held at St. George’s Park – the home of England Football.
The FA Walking Football Cup could easily be confused with the WFA’s Walking Football National Cup. That tournament is organised by the Walking Football Association and has previously been played over a single day. The FA and WFA are separate organisations. This article will concentrate on the FA version of its club cup.
How does the FA Walking Football Cup work?
The first stage of the cup sees dozens of local tournaments held across the country to determine representatives from each of the county FA’s. Each team that qualifies from the county tournaments will then move on to the regional events, where they’ll meet other county qualifiers.
The winners of the regional events will then have earnt the right to attend the cup finals at St. George’s Park in Staffordshire. St. George’s Park has been the home of England football since 2012, and is an impressive complex to play at.
There are three different categories of the FA Walking Football Cup:
- 40s tournament for women
- 50s tournament for mixed teams
- 60s tournament for mixed teams
What’s the history of the FA Walking Football Cup?
The FA’s national cup for clubs was first competed for in 2024. Over 400 teams entered that first tournament, with county qualifiers moving on to six regional heats, before 18 teams travelled to the finals to create three winners.
In the autumn of 2024 the 18 finalists descended on St George’s Park – six teams in each of the three categories. A round robin was played to determine the teams which would play in the Final match. Each of the three finals were all decided on penalties!
