At the beginning of August, Dexter Sports Walking Football Club entered the FA Walking Football Cup (FAWFC) for the first time. After the Dorset County qualifying tournament it seemed our DSWFC 60s Eagles team had just fallen short of qualifying for the Regional Finals. Until now…
The initial stage of the FAWFC are the county qualifiers held across the country by each County FA. The Dorset FA County Qualifiers for the 60s age group were held at our home ground in Hamworthy, Poole, on 3 August.
Close, but no cigar!
We entered two teams – the Eagles and the Falcons. Our Eagles team in particular had a very good tournament and came runners-up in the group. Good, but not good enough, as we’d been led to believe only the winners of the Dorset FA County Qualifier would be invited to the South West Regional Finals in Devon during September.
Rumours…
Almost immediately after the tournament finished, rumours started circulating that two teams would be invited to represent Dorset at the next stage. The rumour went that the winners (Dorchester) and runner-up (Dexter’s Eagles) would both be heading to Devon – in fact, the Dorset FA even posted on Facebook that would be the case!
What is the FA Walking Football Cup?

Hopes dashed… but wait!
Later the same day, the Dorset FA post was edited, and it seemed our hopes had been dashed – only Dorchester would be representing Dorset in the 60s category. Around the same time, further stories were surfacing that Dorchester might not be able to make the next round! Could that mean The Eagles would be going? Confirmation was sought from an official source and an anxious wait ensued.
A few days later it was confirmed… Dorchester had withdrawn from the competition, and DSWFC Eagles would be Dorset FA’s 60s representatives at the FAWFC South West Regional Finals.
Road trip for DSWFC
It may have been unconventional, convoluted and possibly controversial, but Dexter Sports Walking Football Club will be taking a 50s and 60s team to Exeter University on 7 September to play for a place in the Finals of the FA Walking Football Cup 2025 at St Georges Park, the home of English Football.
