65s: A Bizarre Goal

Created with Sketch.

After encouraging signs in the first matchday of the Dorset Walking Football League in October, the Dexter’s 65s squad travelled with confidence to Littledown in Bournemouth for matchday two.

In that first round seven points were bagged (from five matches), with wins against Bournemouth Whites and Weymouth, as well as a goalless draw with Dorchester.

Matchday Squad

Paul Kybert (Joint Manager), Peter Kane (Captain), Peter Cherryman, Merv Young, Jonathan Martin, Clive Robinson, Andy Madden (Joint Manager), David Bacall (GK), Brian Greenfield, Ed Perkins

Match One: Bournemouth Reds (1-0)

Scorer: Pete Kane | Previous Results 1-2

First match of the day was Bournemouth Reds. We went ahead with a Pete Kane strike. In the last round we let them into the game by backing off, not this time though, and despite the Reds trying hard to get back into the game we kept tight in defence. A great save from David late on secured us a 1-0 win.

Match Two: Bournemouth Whites (2-0)

Scorers: Pete Kane & Merv Young | Previous Results: 1-0

We controlled this match by getting on top of them early on with goals from Pete Kane, his second of the day, and Merv Young (with his first of the season). One of the goals came from a sublime defence splitting pass by Clive Robinson. This was our third win in a row.

Match Three: Eastleigh (0-1)

Previous Results: 1-3

The winning run came to an end against Eastleigh, who’re always difficult to beat. Whilst they dominated most of the possession, they struggled to make a clear chance and won the game with probably the most bizarre goal of the day!

Everything seemed to go into slow motion with the ball on the edge of the goal area. Peter Cherryman hesitated after hearing a refs whistle which was loud enough to be on our pitch, but unfortunately was on the adjacent one.

As the ball was literally inches from the line Brian, was unable to prevent the shot without fouling the Eastleigh player or going into the area. That was the only goal of the game.

Match Four: Dorchester (0-3)

Previous Results: 0-0

We lost 3-0 in a game where we just couldn’t keep the ball. Dexter’s were also on the wrong end of a couple of contentious decisions, where goals appeared to be from players running. One of the (possible) ‘not walking’ offences would have been the fourth of the match for Dorchester, giving Dexter’s a penalty. We drew with them in the last round and will push hard to get a result next time we meet.

Match Five: Weymouth (2-0)

Scorers: Pete Kane & Andy Madden | Previous Results: 1-0

Finally, we played Weymouth and got back to winning ways, beating them 2-0 with another goal from Peter Kane (three for the day) and a late one from Andy Madden, taking his season count to five. After those two goals, we ensured there was no way back for the Claret and Blues.

All in all a good day for Dexter’s – with a bit of luck the points haul could have been higher. We’re generally happy with the nine points collected though, especially the three against Bournemouth Reds. After two matchday’s we’re level on points with Bournemouth Reds with five wins from ten matches. Take a look at the current league table.

Top Scorers

Congratulations to everyone involved in kicking off your league. Here’s hoping it grows and draws in more players. We in Worcestershire are approaching Month 4 in our new WF League played at FAHQ Worcester City Ground. Isn’t it wonderful to be out there playing, coaching and refereeing our beautiful game. Good luck!
