Much like Round Three in January, DSWFC 65’s arrived for a league round with the bare bones seven players… oh, and no goalkeeper! It’s fair to say the day started really well, before ending with rather less success than it started.
Before play began, Steve Butters lead a tribute to Vinnie Wright of Amesbury Walking Football Club who sadly passed away the previous Sunday at the 50s round of matches. This was followed by a minutes silence. That tragic day will never be forgotten by those who were there.
DSWFC Matchday Squad
Mark Ciano, Jonathan Martin, Clive Robinson, Peter Cherryman, Peter Kane (c), Paul Kybert and Andy Madden
Match One: B’mouth Whites (4-0)
Previous 2024/25 results: 1-3, 0-1, 0-2
We got off to a flyer with a 4-0 win over Bournemouth Whites in our first match of the day. Two goals for Andy (Madden) took his season tally to seven. A goal for Peter Kane (his fifth of the season) and a first of the season for Mark Ciano after a long absence due to injury was a particularly pleasing way to start the day. As it turned out this was the largest win for any match on the day.
Match Two: Weymouth (3-0)
Previous 2024/25 results: 1-0, 2-0, 2-1
Our second match carried on where the first one finished off. Three more goals and another clean sheet. But for a superb performance by the Weymouth goalkeeper the margin of victory would have been even greater. Another brace for Andy (up to nine for the season) and a first goal of the season for Peter Cherryman helped to turn our dominance into points.
Talking of dominance, in the first two matches we were so dominant, in 40 minutes of football our goalkeeper in those two matches (Paul Kybert) touched the ball just three times.
Match Three: B’mouth Reds (0-2)
Previous 2024/25 results: 1-2, 1-0, 0-0
Into the third game and we got a lesson from Bournemouth Reds in how to keep the ball! We lost 2-0 despite having a couple of chances in the first half there was no way back without having enough of the ball. This was the third and final match that Paul was the stand-in goalkeeper.
Match Four: Eastleigh (0-3)
Previous 2024/25 results: 1-3, 0-1, 0-2
Our fourth match of the day was against Eastleigh, the runaway leaders of the league. Our three previous matches against them this season all ended in defeat, and this one was no different. Andy kindly donned the ‘keepers gloves in this match to give Paul some time outfield.
We lost 3-0 and they remain a team we just can’t seem to find a way to beat. They’re a very mobile team who use the ball efficiently and donβt let you back into the game once they’re in front.
Match Five: Dorchester (0-1)
Previous 2024/25 results: 0-0, 0-3, 1-1
A 1-0 defeat in the last game was disappointing as we had enough of the ball to get a result. We seemed to run out of steam and ideas. For the final match Jonathan had a go in goal.
The team have missed Dave (Bacall) in goal for the last couple of rounds, and hope he returns soon. Likewise, some other regulars have been away or injured, so the hope is the squad will be back to full strength again soon.
Paul Kybert, DSWFC 65s Manager
“All in all it was an enjoyable day of football played in good spirit by all the teams taking part but we must learn a couple of lessons.
“We need to keep better possession, move the ball quicker and more accurately, communicate much better and be better at sticking with our man. In the first two matches our disciplined high press caused all sorts of problems for our opponents and resulted in two high scoring results.”
Paul Gillis, Dexter player
“Well done fellasππΌππΌ Good to see Mark Ciano was back playing ππ»“
