60s: Goal Rush

Created with Sketch.

In the last Dorset Walking Football League tournament of 2024, the team headed for the Littledown Centre in Bournemouth. The squad were looking to build on an unbeaten Matchday One (W1, D2, L0).

Among the eight man squad was Paul Gillis. Usually seen captaining the Dexters 50s team, Paul was making his 60s debut. Also in the squad was Mark Sanderson, making a welcome return after months out with a leg injury.

Matchday Squad
David Bacall (GK), John Gray (Manager), Peter Kane (Captain), Mark Sanderson, Paul Gillis, Brian Hooper, Peter Cherryman, Andy Madden

The Matches

The tournament opened for Dexters with a 1-1 draw against Eastleigh – Peter Kane hitting a great strike to score his second goal of the campaign. That result was followed by our first defeat of the season in the 60s league; a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth Reds. DSWFC could consider themselves a touch unlucky after a Peter Cherryman shot came back off the post.

Sixties manager, John Gray, scored his first of the season in another 1-1 draw, this time against Bournemouth Whites. Our final game of the day was the most eventful. A 3-3 with Weymouth saw Peter Kane added another two strikes to his tally for the day (three in total). Peter’s second was a wonderful strike, which was bettered by a goal late on for Weymouth. Andy Madden scored our other goal in this exciting match.

We’ve scored more goals already this season than the whole of last season! It was another wonderful squad performance, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. Also, thanks to all the support today on the sidelines.”

John Gray, DSWFC 60s manager

Superb effort from all today. Well done guys 👏👏. A big thank you, as usual, to Kate (the coffees before our last match were much needed 👍😊) and to all those that took the time to come and offer their support, it’s always welcome and we’re very grateful.”

Conclusion

Although we didn’t win any matches in this tournament, our league record after seven matches shows we’ve only lost once. Admittedly five of those have been draws, but it shows we’re a tough team to beat. The League Table has us in sixth place, but actually, we’re just two points behind Bournemouth Whites in second – it’s such a tight division.

Next Matchday

In the new year, Dexter’s 60s squad will be heading to the home of Dorchester Town FC for Round Three of the Dorset Walking Football League. That tournament will be on 19 January 2025, at 4:00pm.
