50s: The Final Countdown

Created with Sketch.

In 1986, the Swedish rock band Europe, were keen to tell us about The Final Countdown. They probably weren’t talking about the final round of matches in the Dorset Walking Football League. However, any excuse to use a tenuous 1980’s reference should always be taken!

Our 50s manager, Andy Madden, has been kind enough to pass some comment on the impending closing of the 2023/24 season.

Stop Press
Sherbourne have pulled out of Sunday’s tournament and our kick-off times have been amended to: 11:30 Amesbury and 12:30 Eastleigh. So we have a half-hour break between our matches.

Previous Results

This Sunday sees the 50s League enter its final round with matches against third place Amesbury and fourth place Eastleigh. We’re unfortunate to be without the influential Darren Snell, but that aside, we can field a relatively settled squad of regulars.

We performed well against both opposition teams first time out, losing only 0-1 to Amesbury in November and being pipped 1-2 by Eastleigh in October‘s opening round. We should be fearful of neither team, especially if we bring some impressive Friday night performances to our game on Sunday.

The weather forecast is kind, so get yourselves to Littledown, fill the touchline and cheer & scream the lads on to two victories. Sausage rolls will be available!”

League Standings

Whilst we might be disappointed to have found ourselves towards the bottom of the league all season, we have a good chance of finishing sixth. Amesbury will be playing for runners-up and immediately after we’ve beaten them(!) we’ll be cheering them on as they play one of our direct competitors, Sherborne.

Eastleigh will also be vying for 2nd place, but Dorchester will give them a tough challenge in the opening fixture, hopefully leaving them drained and bedraggled when they face us.

Call to Arms

Results may not suggest we’ve been the best team in the league this season, but we are unquestionably the best club (citation needed – Editor!) and it would be wonderful if on Sunday we can prove we’re also the best supported club in the league. The weather forecast is kind, so get yourselves to Littledown, fill the touchline and cheer & scream the lads on to two victories. Sausage rolls will be available!
