Tournament Update

The 60s team travelled to Weymouth on 21 January for the third round of matches in the Dorset Walking Football League.

The weather was cold, with a bitter wind playing its part on the day. The team had three matches scheduled, including one against Eastleigh, who had swept aside the 60s team 5-0 earlier in the season.

Matchday Squad: Ed Perkins, Mark Sanderson, Peter Kane, Mervyn Young, David Bacall, Peter Cherryman, John Gray & Andy Madden

Dexter Sports 0-1 Weymouth

Ahead of this match both teams were occupying the bottom two places in the league. Dexter Sports had collected just two points from their opening six matches, while Weymouth had secured just one point from their opening half-a-dozen outings.

A disappointing one-nil defeat in our first match of the round was put into some context as Weymouth went on to pick up seven points from their three matches – making home turf advantage pay. They beat Sherborne 2-0 and held Bournemouth Reds to a goalless draw. A set of results which could really ignite the season for them.

Dexter Sports 0-2 Bournemouth Yellows

A further blow was suffered in our second match of the day, losing 2-0 to a mid-table Bournemouth Yellows side who lost their other two matches on the day to Sherborne and Dorchester. Barring a massive win in our third match of the morning, this was the result which ensured Dexter Sports would end Round Three bottom of the Dorset Walking Football League table.

Dexter Sports 1-1 Eastleigh

After the disappointment of the first two matches, few would have given Dexter’s much hope against a rampant Eastleigh who would end the day top of the table. Nevertheless, with what the 60s manager described as “…our best performance of the season so far…”, a very creditable 1-1 was earnt.

In Round 1 of the season, Eastleigh had trashed us 5-0, so a 1-1 draw was a fine way to end the day after Mark Sanderson’s thirty yard belter (in only his third tournament). Hopefully this result can provide the confidence to see improved consistency in future rounds.

I was well pleased to round the day off with a well deserved point. Well done to all the squad – I think we need to carry the Eastleigh performance into the next league round.”

John Gray, 60s Manager
